Is there an official AMC question bank?
Yes, the MCQ Preparation App. The AMC and eMedici made it to help IMGs prepare for the AMC MCQ, and the AMC says it aligns with the exam. You get immediate feedback on every answer, on a computer or on iOS and Android phones, and the questions are refreshed every year.
Access comes with your authorisation. The AMC’s acknowledgement email has a link to set up your eMedici account, and that link is yours alone. The app page says access lasts 12 months from when you activate it, you don’t have to finish every question, and there’s nothing to renew or pay.
eMedici sells other products, but the AMC’s deal covers only the AMC MCQ questions. The AMC hasn’t written clinical exam questions for eMedici.
Sample questions and recalls
Appendix B of the AMC’s MCQ Examination Specifications has sample questions in the exam’s format, including image questions. The same document sets out the blueprint and how scoring works.
Be careful with recalls and reconstructed papers. The AMC says it has seen copies of papers shared online as accurate reproductions of its exams and found many question stems and answers to be wrong. Studying from them can give you a distorted idea of the real questions. Sharing exam content can also stop you sitting future AMC exams.
Books, journals and the AMC’s reading list
The AMC’s resource list for IMGs covers websites, short texts and long textbooks in each discipline. It says the list isn’t a curriculum or prescribed reading. For the MCQ, the AMC suggests review articles in medical journals on common conditions in Australia, and taking care with big reference textbooks, because questions lean towards common clinical problems.
The AMC’s own free book, Australian Medicine in Context, is written for IMGs preparing for AMC exams among others. The handbook page describes it and the AMC’s other publications.
AMC courses and bridging programs
Paid AMC courses are called bridging courses. The AMC keeps a list of known providers as a service, but it doesn’t endorse or accredit any of them and won’t answer questions about them. It suggests you ask a provider how its content lines up with the AMC specifications and graduate outcomes, how familiar its trainers are with the AMC assessments, and what its candidates’ results have been.
A study path built on the AMC’s material
- Read the MCQ Examination Specifications, including the blueprint and the sample questions.
- Plan your revision around the six patient groups, with adult medicine, at 30%, as the largest share.
- Use review articles on common Australian conditions as your main reading, and textbooks for reference.
- Once you’ve bought your authorisation, work through the 210 questions in the AMC’s app and read the feedback on each.
- Practise answering without going back, because the real exam doesn’t let you review or skip questions.
The clinical exam needs different preparation. The clinical exam page covers the AMC’s briefing video and Tips from Examiners.
