PTE Academic equivalent to IELTS scores

Pearson’s current table puts IELTS 6.0 at 47 to 54 overall on PTE Academic, IELTS 6.5 at 55 to 62 and IELTS 7.0 at 63 to 70. It’s Pearson’s best estimate of the PTE Academic equivalent to IELTS Academic, updated with research released in July 2025, and Pearson warns that predicting one test’s score from another always involves some error.

Skill by skill

The skill ranges aren’t the same as the overall ones. The PTE Academic equivalent to an IELTS 7 in speaking is 76 to 82, well above the 63 to 70 that matches an overall IELTS 7. Pearson also says the two tests don’t measure exactly the same thing.

Is PTE Academic easier than IELTS?

Pearson doesn’t rate PTE as easier or harder than IELTS, and it says its 2025 changes didn’t make the test more difficult. What’s clear is how PTE Academic works: one computer test of about 2 hours at a centre, scored by AI with human review on seven task types, with results typically in two days. Compare that with the IELTS format before you choose.

Use the score they ask for, not a conversion

If your university or visa lists a PTE Academic score, that’s the one to aim for. Home Affairs, for example, sets its own PTE minimums for each skill at each English level.
