IELTS vs TOEFL: how the scores compare

ETS publishes a table that lines up IELTS bands with the new TOEFL 1 to 6 scale: IELTS 7 sits with TOEFL 5, and IELTS 6 with TOEFL 4. ETS's advice to schools comparing IELTS vs TOEFL is to set the TOEFL score from the CEFR level they want, then check it against their IELTS requirement.

ETS built this from a study comparing the previous TOEFL iBT with IELTS, and rounded the TOEFL totals up to the next half band so schools don't accept scores that are too low. ETS also gives section-by-section matches on the same page.

Is a TOEFL score equivalent to an IELTS score?

Not exactly. ETS presents the table as a guide to similar levels, not an exact conversion, and your school decides which test and which score it accepts.

TOEFL and the Duolingo English Test

ETS says there's no concordance study between the TOEFL and the Duolingo English Test. Its advice to schools is to pick the TOEFL score from the CEFR level they need.

Which test should you take?

The one your school or agency accepts, at the score it asks for. ETS says TOEFL iBT is recognized by more than 13,500 institutions in over 160 countries. For Australian visas, ETS's bulletin says only TOEFL iBT tests taken before January 21, 2026 and TOEFL iBT Australia are currently approved.
