Getting a motorcycle licence in New Brunswick

Start with an approved motorcycle training course. Then you pass a vision test and two written tests, road signs and the rules of the road for motorcycles, which starts the province’s Graduated Driver’s Licence (GDL) program for motorcyclists. It ends with an on-road test and a full motorcycle licence in New Brunswick.

  • 14Minimum age for a Class 9 moped licence

How do you get a motorcycle licence in New Brunswick?

  1. Take an approved motorcycle training course. You’ll need its blue certificate of completion, unless you’ve held a full motorcycle licence before.
  2. Pass the written tests, online or in person: road sign recognition and the rules of the road exam for motorcycles. You must be at least 16, with a parent’s consent witnessed by a non-relative if you’re under 18.
  3. At a Service New Brunswick (SNB) centre, pass the vision test and show proof of the course. If you don’t already hold a New Brunswick licence, bring one proof of identification and two proofs of residency too.
  4. Ride under the motorcycle GDL rules, without interruption, for the whole program.
  5. Pass the on-road test on a road-worthy motorcycle, with proof of its registration and insurance and a helmet approved by the Canadian Standards Association (CSA), or equivalent.

Motorcycle GDL rules

For the whole program:

  • Zero tolerance for alcohol and drugs, at any age
  • No riding from sunset to sunrise
  • No passengers
  • No towing a trailer

Endorsements and engine size

A Class 6 licence lets you drive a motorcycle and any Class 9 vehicle. The letter on your licence sets which motorcycles:

  • H: graduated motorcycle licence, up to 550 cc
  • I: graduated motorcycle licence, all motorcycles
  • D: motorcycles over 50 cc and up to 550 cc
  • A: all motorcycles

You need D, H or I before the road test. Take it on a motorcycle of 550 cc or less and your licence is limited to that size; take it on one over 550 cc and there’s no engine size limit.

Licensed motorcycle schools

The province lists these licensed motorcycle schools:

  • Atlantic Moto Skills Ltd
  • Dornan Academy of Defensive Driving
  • Safety Services New Brunswick
  • République Éducation Automobile Enr.
  • Moto Elite NB
  • Motorcycle Safety Quest
  • Sewell’s Driver’s Ed

The motorcycle GDL page has each school’s phone number, and website where it has one.

Mopeds and scooters (Class 9)

A Class 9 motor-driven cycle licence covers mopeds and scooters of 50 cc or less, and farm tractors. You can apply at 14 with a parent’s consent. The written tests can be taken online or in person, with one proof of identification and two proofs of residency.

For the road test, bring the yellow slip from the driver examiner showing you passed the written tests within the past six months, the moped with its registration and insurance, and a CSA-approved helmet (or equivalent). If you’re under 18, bring the signed parental consent form too.
