New Brunswick practice permit test: where to study

The province gives you one thing to study for the written exams, the New Brunswick Driver’s Handbook, and no practice test. A New Brunswick practice permit test in an app or on a website comes from another company, so treat the handbook as the final word.

  • 1Study source the province names
  • 2Written exams to study for: signs and rules
  • 3Years’ experience your practice driver needs

A study plan for the NB written exams

  1. Download the handbook parts from gnb.ca. By their titles, Part 4 (Rules of the Road) and Part 7 (Traffic Signs) match the two exams.
  2. Read the rest too.
  3. Learn the signs by kind: regulatory, warning and guide. Then learn what the signal lights mean.
  4. Note the numbers as you go, like speed limits, the school zone limit and how far back to stop from a school bus. The road signs page gives these from the Motor Vehicle Act.
  5. Test yourself with a practice app, and check anything you get wrong against the handbook.

Is there an official New Brunswick practice permit test?

Not on the province’s pages. The province’s driver licence testing page tells you to read and study the handbook, and the handbook page says it gives you the information you need to prepare for testing. Some apps say their questions are based on the handbook.

Driver training courses

You don’t need a course to take the written exams. The province’s pages don’t list course prices, so ask the school.

How to choose

Studying alone? The handbook is a download from gnb.ca, and an app adds questions to practise on. Where an app and the handbook disagree, go by the handbook.

Want lessons, or the shorter Level 1 wait? Look for a licensed driver training course. Riding a motorcycle instead? The motorcycle course comes first, and the motorcycle page lists the licensed schools.
