The LNAT bursary

It pays the whole fee for the National Admissions Test for Law (LNAT) if you, or the family member you live with, get certain state benefits. The LNAT bursary is for UK and European Union (EU) applicants only, at UK and EU test centres, and you must apply before you book. If you’re accepted, you get an e-voucher by email and enter it in place of a card number when you book.

  • £75The fee it covers in full
  • 1Bursary per test cycle
  • Up to 10 working daysTime to process an application

Who can get an LNAT bursary?

You need to meet just one of these:

  • You get the 16‑19 Bursary in England, the top rate of Education Maintenance Allowance in Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland, or the Adult Learning Grant.
  • You get Pupil Premium payments or free school meals.
  • A family member you live with gets Income Support, income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance, Employment and Support Allowance or Universal Credit, with an element for your needs.
  • A family member you live with gets child tax credits, you’re named on the award, and the household income on it is under £30,000.
  • You live in another EU country and get an equivalent state benefit there.

Applicants from outside the EU can’t get a bursary, and it can’t be used at test centres outside the EU, where the fee is higher.

What evidence to send

  • For an education grant: proof from the school or agency that pays it.
  • For Pupil Premium or free school meals: an email or letter from your school.
  • For a family member’s benefit: a recent letter from the agency showing how it’s worked out, plus proof you live at the same address if you aren’t named.
  • For child tax credits: a recent letter from HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) that names you and shows the household income.
  • For an EU benefit: evidence in English, or with a translation attached.

Send evidence for one reason only, as a scan or clear photo attached to the online form. Bank statements showing benefit payments aren’t accepted. The LNAT Consortium says the wrong document, such as an Education Maintenance Allowance agreement in place of the Notice of Entitlement, or a mistyped email address, can delay your bursary.

How to apply for an LNAT bursary and book

  1. Set up your LNAT account. You can do this before you apply.
  2. Fill in the online bursary application form and attach your evidence.
  3. Allow up to ten working days from when LNAT receives it.
  4. If you’re approved, look out for the e-voucher email. It’s the only notice you’ll get.
  5. Book a slot at a UK or EU test centre and enter the voucher number where you’d enter a card.

Bursary rules after you book

Each bursary covers one booking, and the usual rescheduling and cancellation terms apply. If you miss the test, reschedule too late or are turned away for not having accepted ID, you rebook at your own expense, and you can’t get a second bursary in the same cycle.
