What each OET grade means
| Grade | Score | What OET says you can do |
|---|---|---|
| A | 450 to 500 | Communicate very fluently and effectively with patients and colleagues |
| B | 350 to 440 | Communicate effectively, with only occasional inaccuracies and hesitations |
| C+ | 300 to 340 | Keep the interaction going despite occasional errors and lapses |
| C | 200 to 290 | Keep the interaction going despite occasional errors and lapses |
| D | 100 to 190 | Keep some interaction going, but may ask for clarification |
| E | 0 to 90 | Manage simple interaction on familiar topics |
OET’s handbook gives C+ and C one shared description. The grade you need is set by the body you’re applying to, not by OET.
When does the OET exam result come out?
| Mode | Results |
|---|---|
| Computer at a venue | From 48 hours after all four sub-tests; 95% within 6 calendar days |
| OET@Home | From 48 hours after all four sub-tests; OET’s handbook says most within 6 calendar days |
| Paper, India and the Philippines | From 5 days after the test date |
| Paper, everywhere else | From 13 days after the test date |
OET calls these times indicative. Public holidays, especially near the end of the year, and extra quality or security checks can slow them down. You get an email when your results are ready, and each date in OET’s calendar shows its results day.
How marks turn into an OET score
Listening and Reading have 42 questions each, one mark per correct answer, converted to the 500 scale. The Listening and Reading pages give the marks grade B typically takes. Writing is marked on six criteria and Speaking on nine, and the criterion scores are combined and converted the same way.
How to share your OET results
- Log in to myOET (paper) or your OET Account (computer and OET@Home).
- Give the organisation you’re applying to permission to see your results. You can take it away later.
- The organisation checks them in OET’s verification portal, which is free for them to use.
Australian visa applicants have an extra step to get an overall score, set out on the Australia page.
How long is an OET exam result valid?
OET says there’s no global standard; each organisation decides. These are the rules three of them publish:
- Nursing and Midwifery Council (UK): two years, counted from your test date to when it assesses your application.
- Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (Ahpra) and the National Boards: two years before you apply for registration, with exceptions for continuous work or study in English.
- Department of Home Affairs (Australia): taken in the three years before your visa application, depending on the visa.
The Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland’s rule is on the OET for nurses page.
Can you ask for an OET re-mark?
Yes, for one or more sub-tests, within 72 hours of your results coming out. You pay per sub-test when you ask, and the fee is refunded if your grade changes. The outcome takes three to six weeks, and your score can go up, down or stay the same. You don’t get feedback, and once a re-mark is published it can’t be swapped back. If you think a re-mark wasn’t handled fairly, you can appeal within five calendar days of the decision.
