How OET suggests you start your OET preparation

OET’s own answer to “where should I begin?” runs in this order:

Take the free Intro to OET online course, which covers the format, the skills and how the test is marked.
Download the OET Study Guide, which points you to resources for each part of the test.
If you’re not sure of your level, take OET Pulse, a 30-minute check of reading, listening and language knowledge for healthcare professionals.
Work through the official sample tests, one every 2 to 3 weeks, and spend the time in between on the skills behind your wrong answers.

How long does OET preparation take?

OET doesn’t give a number of weeks. It says it depends on two things: your English level now, and how many hours a week you can study. If your English needs to improve, or you only have a few hours a week, expect it to take longer.

It also says test practice on its own isn’t enough. Sample tests build test-taking skills, but vocabulary, grammar, reading and listening comprehension and communication skills are what move your grades.

OET books and eBooks

OET sells its own guided practice eBooks in the OET Store, each built around one of its sample tests to help with strategy, vocabulary and your errors. The Listening eBooks are on the sample tests page with their price. OET’s preparation FAQ says the store also has courses and books beyond the free samples.

Commercial OET books exist too. OET’s advice is to be careful with material that isn’t official, since it may misrepresent the test.

OET courses and teachers

OET lists two kinds of preparation partner. Premium Preparation Partners are teachers OET recognises as highly qualified, with experience writing and running OET courses, and their courses have set entry levels and lengths. Other partners have done OET’s preliminary training only and can show a digital OET Knowledge badge.

Partner courses vary a lot. On OET’s partner page, some are short taster courses and others ask for a starting level, such as two 180-hour online courses for doctors and nurses that ask for an International English Language Testing System (IELTS) score of 6.0 or equivalent.

What to check before you pay for an OET course

That it’s written for your profession. Writing and Speaking change with each of the 12 professions.
That it practises the mode you’ll sit: paper, computer or OET@Home.
How much Writing and Speaking feedback you get, and from whom.
Whether the subscription renews on its own, and how to cancel.
