The Iowa chauffeur license (Class D)

If you drive people for hire in a vehicle built for 15 or fewer passengers, including you, you need the Iowa chauffeur license: Class D, endorsement 3. You must be 18 or older, pass a vision screening and have a clear driving record for the past two years. Iowa's rules list a Class D drive test that the DOT can waive, and its license page says valid Iowa license holders take no knowledge or driving test.

How do you get a chauffeur license in Iowa?

  1. Book a Driver's License/ID appointment, choose Other, and note "Adding a Chauffeur endorsement."
  2. Pass the vision screening at the visit.
  3. The DOT checks for a clear driving record over the past two years.
  4. Pay the Class D fee of $8 a year, against $4 a year for an ordinary Class C license, as of October 2026.

Class D or a CDL?

Class D stops at 15 passengers including the driver. A vehicle built to carry 16 or more people, the driver included, needs a commercial license with the passenger endorsement, and a school bus needs the school bus endorsement too.
