Who needs the Iowa DOT driving test?
Under 18, you take it if any of these apply:
- Your driver education instructor asked for it, or under Iowa's rules your parent or guardian did.
- You finished the DOT's parent-taught driver's education program.
- You have a medical condition that may affect safe driving. Needing glasses or contacts doesn't count.
- Your license has a restriction that takes a test to remove, or a court ordered one.
Who needs it at 18 or older
At 18 or older, you take it if:
- You've never been licensed in any U.S. state or territory.
- Your license, from Iowa or another state, has been expired or invalid for a year or more.
- You have a medical condition that may affect safe driving, a restriction that takes a test to remove, or a court order.
- You were in a certain kind of crash that shows a need to recheck your driving.
Renewing, or swapping a valid out-of-state license, doesn't need one. The DOT can still ask for a drive test at any time.
Booking it and what to bring
Book with the DOT's drive test scheduler.
Iowa's rules don't require an instruction permit to take a driving test. You do need a permit to practice on the road, though.
The car inspection
The examiner inspects your car before you drive. It needs:
- Plates on the front and back. A single out-of-state or temporary plate is accepted.
- A working horn, turn signals front and back, seat belts and brake lights.
- Registration and insurance that haven't expired.
- At least one rearview mirror, inside or outside.
- Driver and front passenger doors that open normally, and a driver's window that opens.
- Working wipers, headlights and taillights, as the weather and time of day need.
What the examiner looks for
- Defensive driving: checking mirrors, looking both ways at intersections, and checking over your shoulder before a lane change or merge.
- Smooth steering and braking.
- Full stops where required. Never roll through a stop sign or red light.
- Posted speed limits, and slowing down when conditions are poor.
- A signal at least 100 feet before turning or changing lanes.
- A safe following distance. The DOT's test page asks for at least two seconds, while the manual tells new drivers to keep three, so three seconds meets both.
How the test is scored
- Parallel parking isn't part of the test.
- Before an operator's driving test you get form 430024, which explains the criteria.
- At the end, the examiner explains your score.
- A result counts for 180 days. If you fail, the examiner decides when you can test again.
Car technology on the test
Safety features are fine to use: backup cameras, blind spot monitors, lane departure warnings, parking sensors, automatic emergency braking and lane keeping assist. Convenience features aren't: adaptive cruise control and automatic parallel parking stay off. You still have to check your mirrors and look over your shoulder yourself.
