Taking the Iowa DOT permit test online

Yes, if you're under 18. The DOT's Skip the Trip program lets a parent or guardian proctor the knowledge test at home, or a participating school give it. Adults take it at a DMV or county treasurer's office instead. Passing the Iowa DOT permit test online doesn't hand you the permit, though. You still make an appointment to have it issued and bring your documents.

Who can take it at home

  • Students within 30 days of their 14th birthday and younger than 18.
  • A computer or other device connected to the internet, but not a phone or tablet.
  • A parent or guardian with a valid Iowa driver's license to give the test.

How does the Iowa DOT permit test online work?

  1. The parent or guardian sends the DOT's Application to Proctor Knowledge Exam. Allow 7 to 14 days for it to be processed.
  2. The parent and student get an email with instructions. The link in it expires after 72 hours. If it runs out, you send the application again.
  3. The student takes the test with the parent watching.
  4. The results and next steps arrive by email.
  5. After passing, book an appointment at a DMV or county treasurer's office and bring your documents to get the permit.

Taking it at school

Some Iowa schools and agencies give the knowledge test through Skip the Trip. You must be enrolled with one. When you pass, the student gets an email confirming the result, and then books the permit visit like everyone else.

The DOT's Skip the Trip page lists the schools taking part, such as Abraham Lincoln High School in Des Moines, the Ames Community School District and Waukee High School. Schools that want to join can contact the DOT from that page.

What else the DOT lets you do online

The DOT's My MVD site handles license renewal for people 18 and older who qualify, address changes, renewal reminders, a free non-certified driving record, and a new card when you turn 21. The manual says My MVD is the only place to renew an Iowa license online, and warns that other websites sell information the DOT gives away free.

A first permit, a first license and a first REAL ID all need an in-person visit.
