Booking an Iowa DOT permit test appointment

You book an Iowa DOT permit test appointment online. Adults choose a Driver's License/ID appointment, and teens under 18 use a separate scheduler. Any of the 18 DOT service centers will do, and county treasurer's offices handle their own visits, so contact the one you plan to use. Walk-ins are welcome, but the DOT recommends booking.

How do you book an Iowa DOT permit test appointment?

  1. Build your document list with the DOT's online checklist, so you know what to bring.
  2. Under 18, have a parent or guardian plan to come with you, or sign the consent form (430018) ahead of time.
  3. Open the right scheduler from the table and pick any DOT service center.
  4. Choose an open time and confirm.
  5. Need to change it? Use the DOT's find, cancel or reschedule page.

Testing at a county treasurer's office

The knowledge test is also given at county treasurer's offices. The manual asks you to contact the office you plan to visit to see how it's handling business, and the Iowa State Treasurers Association's map lists each office's details. County office fees are on the DMV locations page.

Testing at home or school first

Under 18, you can skip the test part of the visit. A parent proctors it at home, or a participating school gives it. You still book an appointment afterward to get the permit issued, and the parent's proctor application can take 7 to 14 days, so start early.
