Getting your Iowa driver's records

You can view and print your own driving record free on the DOT's My MVD site, but that copy is for reference only. For anything official or legal, order a certified record: $5.50 plus $3 in fees online, or $5.50 by mail, as of October 2026. Iowa driver's records for someone else need that person's written consent.

Online through My MVD

  • Non-certified record: free to view or print.
  • Certified record: $5.50, plus a $1.50 online service fee and a $1.50 card processing fee.
  • You'll need your Iowa driver's license number and Social Security number.

How do you get Iowa driver's records by mail?

  1. Fill in the Privacy Act Agreement for Request of Motor Vehicle Records. For your own record, complete sections A, B and D.
  2. Print and sign it, with your full name at the top of each page.
  3. Add a clear photocopy of your license or ID.
  4. Enclose a check for $5.50 per record, made out to "Treasurer, State of Iowa."
  5. Mail it to the Iowa Department of Transportation, P.O. Box 9204, Des Moines, IA 50306-9204. The record comes back by secure email.

Other records and crash reports

Old tickets, earlier license applications, your own accident reports and similar documents cost $0.50 each, using the same form. An officer's crash report costs $4, and only people involved, their lawyers and their insurers can get one. The DOT keeps the $4 even if no report exists.

Someone else's record needs their notarized written consent, or a copy of their license or ID with their signed consent.

When a clean record matters

Teen license steps depend on a clean record: six months for the school and intermediate licenses, 12 for the full license. A parent who wants to teach driver's ed needs a clear record for the past two years, and the DOT suggests checking it on My MVD first.
