Getting an Iowa moped license

If you're 14 or 15, Iowa law requires a moped safety course before you get one. You also pass a vision screening and the operator knowledge test, the same one as the car permit, unless you already hold a valid permit or license. The Iowa moped license costs $8 and lasts two years, as of October 2026, and it covers mopeds only.

What do you need for an Iowa moped license?

  • Under 16: an approved moped safety course.
  • A vision screening.
  • The operator knowledge test, which is waived if you have a valid permit or license.
  • Possibly a driving test on a moped, off-street or on-street. Iowa's rules let the DOT ask for one.
  • The $8 fee.

Moped safety courses

The DOT lists course sponsors across the state, mostly community colleges and a few schools and dealers. They include:

  • DMACC in Ankeny
  • Hawkeye Community College in Cedar Falls
  • Kirkwood in Cedar Rapids
  • Iowa Western in Council Bluffs
  • Iowa Valley in Marshalltown
  • Indian Hills in Ottumwa

Call a sponsor near you for dates. The DOT recommends a course for every rider, even past 16.

Is an Iowa moped permit different?

The DOT's fee list has a moped license and no separate moped permit. If you'd like to ride a motorcycle later, that needs its own permit and test.

What to study

The DOT's Moped Operator's Manual covers riding a moped. For the knowledge test, use the Iowa Driver's License Manual and the DOT's practice test, since moped riders take the same operator test as drivers.
