Iowa DMV locations: DOT service centers and county offices

In Iowa, the DMV is the Motor Vehicle Division of the Iowa Department of Transportation. For a license, permit or ID, you can use any of its 18 driver's license service centers or a county treasurer's office. You don't have to pick the one closest to home. The Iowa DMV website is iowadot.gov, and the knowledge test is given at any of these locations.

Looking for Iowa City or Cedar Falls?

Neither has a DOT service center on the DOT's list. For Iowa City, the list has the Coralville center at 2303 Jones Blvd. For Cedar Falls, it has the Waterloo center at 2060 Sovia Dr. County treasurer's offices are another option, and the treasurers' map shows where they are.

County treasurer's offices

County treasurer's offices also handle driver's licenses and give the knowledge test. Each sets its own hours, which the Iowa State Treasurers Association's site lists, and the manual asks you to contact the office before you go.

A $10 out-of-county fee may apply if you visit a county where you don't live. The fee is set by the county.

Is iowadot.gov the Iowa DMV website?

Yes. The DOT's Motor Vehicle Division pages are on iowadot.gov, and its online services are on My MVD. The manual says My MVD is the only place to renew your license online, and warns about websites that sell information the DOT gives for free.

For general questions, the DOT's phone number is 515-239-1101.
