How do you get an instruction permit in Iowa?
- Be at least 14.
- Pass the knowledge test and the vision screening at a DMV or county treasurer's office. Under 18, you can take the test at home or at a participating school instead.
- Under 18, get a parent or guardian's written consent, in person or on form 430018.
- Bring proof of identity, Iowa residency and your Social Security number.
- Pay $6. Medical or vision conditions that may affect driving can mean extra paperwork.
Who can supervise you
Under 18, you can drive at any time with adult supervision. The adult must hold a valid driver's license and be one of these:
- Your parent, guardian or custodian.
- An immediate family member who's at least 21.
- A driver education instructor.
- Someone at least 25 with written permission from your parent, guardian or custodian.
Rules while you hold an Iowa instruction permit
- No driving without adult supervision, including to school or work. That takes the school license.
- No cell phone, tablet or other electronic device while driving, apart from equipment built into the car.
- No more passengers than seat belts.
- No commercial vehicles, nothing rated at 16,001 pounds or more, and no motorcycle unless you have a motorcycle license.
If you break the rules
A first conviction, crash or restriction violation brings a warning letter, and your permit may be suspended. A second means a 30-day suspension. Each one also pushes back your move to the next license by six months.
What comes next
At 14 and a half you can apply for the optional school license, which lets you drive alone to school and work within set limits. At 16, after driver education and 12 months on a permit, comes the intermediate license.
