Getting an Iowa state ID card

An Iowa state ID is the DOT's non-driver ID card, Class O. Each card is good for eight years, and the fee is $8 as of October 2026. Your first Iowa state ID takes an in-person visit: you book an appointment and bring proof of identity, your Social Security number and your Iowa address. You can ask for the REAL ID gold star on it at no extra cost.

How do you get an Iowa state ID?

  1. Build your document list with the DOT's online checklist.
  2. Book a new ID appointment at any DMV, or contact your county treasurer's office.
  3. Bring your proof of identity, residency and Social Security number.
  4. Pay $8. The card comes in a plain white envelope within 30 days.

Can you get an Iowa ID card online?

Not the first one. After that, the DOT's renewal page covers renewing in person or online if you qualify, and My MVD handles the new card you need when you turn 21.

A lost or stolen ID card is replaced at a DMV appointment for $10.

Adding the REAL ID star

The star costs nothing extra, but it needs two printed proofs of your Iowa address and an in-person visit. Since May 7, 2025, you need it, or another accepted document, for domestic flights.
