Kentucky DMV online services: myDrive, and what stays in person

Kentucky’s driver services portal is myDrive, run by the Transportation Cabinet from drive.ky.gov. Once your account is linked to your license, these Kentucky DMV online services handle renewals, replacements and address changes. You can’t take the permit test online, though: KSP gives it in person, by appointment, and only the booking is online.

What can you do with Kentucky DMV online services?

  • Renew a license, learner’s permit or ID card. Motorcycle permits and REAL ID permits are renewed in person.
  • Order a replacement license, permit or ID card
  • Update your physical or mailing address
  • Fill in a pre-application before a Regional Office visit
  • Check your credential and printing status
  • Get Cabinet notices, add an emergency contact and sign up for expiration reminders
  • Pay eligible reinstatement fees and use some CDL services

Linking your account with a Letter ID

To use the online services, you link your myDrive account to your credential with a Letter ID. It’s a 9-character code from a Transportation Cabinet letter dated on or after June 6, 2026 and issued in the last 60 days. If you don’t have one, ask for it by mail when you create the account, and it goes to the mailing address on file, or get one at a Regional Office.

You don’t need a linked account for the pre-application. Non-U.S. citizens and permanent residents can make an account and pre-apply, but linking a credential and the online services are for U.S. citizens.

Can you take the Kentucky permit test online?

No. KSP gives the written test in person at its regional testing sites, by appointment only. What you can do online is book the test on the KSP scheduler, fill in the myDrive pre-application and read the Kentucky Driver Manual.

What still needs an office visit

  • Your first permit and license, with tests at KSP
  • A first REAL ID
  • A name change
  • Moving a license from another state
  • A new ID card

Is there a Kentucky DMV website?

Not under that name. Licensing is on drive.ky.gov, the Transportation Cabinet’s driver site, and testing is on the Kentucky State Police driver testing page. Vehicle registration renewal has its own link on drive.ky.gov and isn’t part of myDrive.
