Average MCAT scores of applicants and new students
These are AAMC figures for US MD-granting schools, published December 9, 2025. For comparison, the mean across everyone who took the MCAT from 2023 to 2025 was 500.6.
| 2025 | Number | Mean MCAT | Mean GPA |
|---|---|---|---|
| Applicants to US medical schools | 54,699 | 506.3 | 3.67 |
| Matriculants (started medical school) | 23,440 | 512.1 | 3.81 |
So what counts as a good MCAT score?
Each cell is the share of applicants to US MD schools who were accepted somewhere, from the AAMC’s Table A-23, which combines the 2023-2024 to 2025-2026 application cycles. Overall, 45.1% of applicants were accepted.
Both numbers matter. With a 514-517, 77.2% of applicants with a GPA above 3.79 were accepted, against 56.5% of those with a GPA of 3.40-3.59. Low scores aren’t a closed door, but they’re a steep one: below 486, 0.6% of applicants were accepted. Lower GPA bands are in the full AAMC table.
| MCAT total | All applicants | GPA above 3.79 | GPA 3.60-3.79 | GPA 3.40-3.59 | GPA 3.20-3.39 | GPA 3.00-3.19 |

Is there a minimum MCAT score for medical school?
The AAMC doesn’t set one. Each school sets its own expectations, which MSAR shows school by school. The grid above shows acceptances at every MCAT band, including the lowest.
Finding each school’s MCAT scores
The AAMC’s Medical School Admission Requirements (MSAR) database covers the MD-granting schools in the US and Canada. A paid subscription shows each school’s accepted applicants and matriculants by MCAT score and GPA, plus required and recommended premed courses. As of October 2026 a one-year subscription is $33, basic school profiles are free, and an approved Fee Assistance award includes a two-year MSAR subscription. DO schools aren’t in it.
Are there medical schools that don’t require the MCAT?
The AAMC doesn’t list any. Its 2027 AMCAS Applicant Guide tells applicants that most medical schools want MCAT scores no more than three years old, and that you can send your application before your scores are out. If a school or program says it admits without the MCAT, confirm it in that school’s own admissions rules or in MSAR.
MCAT scores by major, race or state
The AAMC publishes these in its FACTS tables for 2025-2026: Table A-17 gives MCAT scores and GPAs by undergraduate major, A-18 by race and ethnicity, and A-19 and A-20 by state of legal residence for applicants and matriculants. They’re free to download as Excel files.
