Nebraska CDL practice test, manual and permit

DMV’s free Nebraska CDL practice test is an online version of the general knowledge test for a commercial driver’s license (CDL), and each question names the page in the CDL manual where its answer is. The real general knowledge test has 50 questions, and like every CDL written test it takes 80% to pass. You pass the written tests to get a commercial learner’s permit (CLP), hold it at least 14 days, and then book the skills test.

What’s on the Nebraska CDL practice test?

DMV’s CDL practice test covers the general knowledge test only, and DMV says to use it with the Nebraska Commercial Driver’s License Manual, not instead of it. DMV switched to a new edition of the manual on March 16, 2026. Audio versions of every CDL written test except hazardous materials are available at all driver licensing offices.

The counts come from Nebraska DMV’s examiner manual. If you fail a CDL written or skills test, you wait at least one day to retest.

The commercial learner’s permit (CLP)

  • You need a CDL to drive a vehicle rated over 26,000 pounds, a combination rated 26,001 pounds or more when the towed vehicle is rated over 10,000 pounds, a vehicle for 16 or more people, or one that needs hazardous materials placards
  • A CDL needs age 21 for interstate driving and 18 for driving only within Nebraska
  • A CLP lasts one year and lets you drive with a CDL holder for training, while you also carry your Class O license
  • You self-certify the type of driving you do, and some categories need a current medical examiner’s certificate (the DOT physical) on the National Registry
  • If your CLP expires before you pass all three parts of the skills test, every part must be taken again

Training and the skills test

Since February 7, 2022, federal rules require Entry Level Driver Training before a first CDL, a class upgrade or a first hazardous materials test, and DMV checks it electronically. CDL skills tests are by appointment only, booked by phone by the person taking the test, once the written tests are passed and you hold a CLP. Approved third-party testers also give skills tests for a fee, with two business days’ notice to DMV, and DMV may ask you to retest as part of its audits.
