Nebraska ID card

A Nebraska ID, the State Identification Card, is free for US citizens who live in Nebraska, however long it’s valid. If you aren’t a US citizen, it costs $29 for 5 years, and less for a shorter card tied to your immigration documents. You can’t hold a Nebraska driver’s license and a State ID card at the same time, though a license holder can switch to an ID card online.

  • $0For US citizens
  • $295-year card for non-citizens
  • $16Non-citizen replacement

What do you bring for a Nebraska ID?

  • One proof of US citizenship or lawful status, such as a certified birth certificate or a valid passport
  • Two documents from different sources with your Nebraska home address
  • Your Social Security number, or a valid I-94 in a foreign passport

If you need a certified birth certificate to get an ID card for voting and you don’t have a current Nebraska license or ID, the state health department can issue one at no fee.

REAL ID

Nebraska ID cards are REAL ID compliant, marked with a star in the upper right corner, unless the card says it’s not for federal identification. The 30-day paper receipt you leave the office with isn’t accepted by the Transportation Security Administration for boarding a plane.

Renewing a Nebraska ID card

State law lets anyone 21 or older with a digital photo and signature on file renew an ID card online, with an in-person renewal at least once every 16 years. DMV’s pages differ on how often online renewal is allowed: the ID card page says once every 10 years, while the January 2025 Driver’s Manual says three times in a row. If you’re not sure whether you can renew online, ask Driver Licensing Services.
