Is the Nebraska DMV practice test like the real one?

DMV says the questions and answers in its online practice test come from the same pool as the test it gives at its offices. You pick the number of questions, the app chooses them at random, and each question names the page of the Nebraska Drivers Manual where the answer is. DMV still says to use it together with the manual, not instead of it.

The sample test at the back of the manual is different. It was written by AAA, it mixes true-or-false and multiple-choice questions, and the manual says its questions aren’t the ones on the actual test. Both show page numbers, so a wrong answer sends you straight back to the rule.

A study plan for the written test

  1. Read the whole Nebraska Driver’s Manual once. DMV says it has what you need for every car permit test and the Class O test.
  2. Go back over signs, signals and pavement markings, then right-of-way, speed limits and railroad crossings.
  3. Write down the numbers: 25 mph in residential districts, 40 mph minimum on the interstate, 100 feet to signal a turn, 15 to 50 feet from the rail at a crossing.
  4. Take DMV’s online practice test a few times, then the manual’s sample test, and reread the page behind every miss.
  5. If you’ll take the test in Spanish, study from the Spanish manual too, but check rules against the newer English edition.

Choosing an app or website

Pick one set up for Nebraska, so its questions follow the Nebraska manual rather than another state’s. Check what it says about the real test: it should match DMV’s 25 questions with 20 right to pass. Some app plans renew every week, so read the price before you start a trial. Motorcycle and commercial (CDL) tests are separate, and DMV has its own online practice test for the CDL general knowledge test.

Courses and driving schools

Teens can take a DMV-approved driver safety course, and passing it waives the written and drive tests for a school permit or a provisional operator’s permit (POP). Driver training schools teach adults and anyone who wants more practice behind the wheel. Each school sets its own price.
