The Nebraska driver manual

The Nebraska driver manual is free to download from Nebraska DMV, and the current English edition is dated January 2025. It covers what you need for the written tests for the school learner’s permit (LPE), learner’s permit (LPD), school permit (SCP), provisional operator’s permit (POP) and Class O license. A sample practice exam with an answer key sits at the back. The Spanish translation and the audio version are older, so check anything that looks different against the English PDF.

What’s in the Nebraska driver manual?

  • Section 1: the Nebraska license, permit types, documents, testing and the point system
  • Section 2: alcohol and drugs, seat belts and child seats, deer, insurance and required equipment
  • Section 3: traffic signals, signs and pavement markings
  • Section 4: right-of-way, speed limits, passing, turning, parking and railroad crossings
  • Section 5: interstate, night and bad-weather driving, distraction and defensive driving
  • Section 6: sharing the road with motorcycles, bikes, pedestrians, snowplows, school buses and trucks
  • Section 7: what to do after a crash
  • Driver licensing locations, county numbers and the AAA sample test with answers

The manual is a summary, and the manual itself says the law’s exact wording is in the Nebraska statutes.

Spanish and audio versions

DMV posts a Spanish Driver’s Manual, dated December 2021. The audio manual on DMV’s site follows the 2019 manual, and DMV says it’s working on new files; where the two differ, it says the PDF is correct.

Manuals for motorcycles and trucks

The car manual doesn’t cover the motorcycle (Class M) or commercial (CDL) written tests. Each has its own manual on DMV’s manuals page: the Motorcycle Operator Manual dated September 2024, and the CDL manual DMV uses from March 16, 2026.

Printing the Nebraska driver manual

DMV says to set your printer to “Booklet” if you print a whole manual, since page-by-page printing can lose the page numbers and headings. That matters, because DMV’s practice tests point you to manual pages by number. Printed copies of the manual note that office hours inside may be out of date, and DMV keeps current hours on its locations page.
