The Nebraska DMV driving test

The Nebraska DMV driving test is a drive on a standard route with an examiner, in a car you bring. The examiner marks each error, and more than 15 points is a fail. You might not take it at the DMV at all, because passing a DMV-approved driver safety course waives it. You take it if you use the 50-hour form instead, or if you’re 18 or older and getting your first license.

  • 15Error points you can have and still pass
  • 12Mistakes that fail you on the spot
  • 3Failed Class O drive tests before a wait

Who takes the Nebraska DMV driving test?

  • Teens applying for a school permit or a provisional operator’s permit (POP) with the 50-hour form. The written test is waived if your permit is valid or expired less than a year ago, and a POP applicant whose school permit is valid or expired less than a year ago skips both tests
  • Anyone 18 or older getting a first license who never held a POP
  • New residents who can’t hand in their out-of-state license
  • Anyone driving licensing staff decide to test, including at renewal

Teens who pass a DMV-approved driver safety course don’t take it at the DMV, since the instructor gives the drive test and the school sends the result.

The car you bring

You furnish the car, and it must suit the license you’re applying for. The examiner checks the brake lights first, and if both are missing or don’t work, the test is canceled. A Class O drive test can’t be taken in an autocycle or on a moped.

  • Good mechanical condition and working brake lights
  • A working speedometer
  • Clean seat belts that work, for the driver and the examiner (passenger belt on 1964 and newer models, both on 1973 and newer)
  • A clean interior

What the examiner checks

Instructions play on a tablet before you start, and the examiner gives each direction as early as possible. Only you and the examiner ride in the car. The test covers, among other things:

  • Starting and stopping
  • Right and left turns
  • Lane use and position
  • Stop signs and traffic signals
  • Speed control
  • Right-of-way
  • Parking and backing

DMV’s examiner manual lists 12 mistakes that end the test at once. They include a crash or avoidable incident, going 6 mph or more over the limit, not wearing a seat belt, turning from the wrong lane, driving left of center, driving over a curb or sidewalk, a serious traffic violation, stalling in an intersection, unsafe behavior or poor control of the car.

Booking a drive test in Omaha, Lincoln and other cities

In Bellevue, Grand Island, Lincoln, Norfolk and Omaha you need an appointment for a car or motorcycle drive test, and you book it online. The North Omaha office at 4606 N 56th St doesn’t give drive tests, so book the Omaha office at 17007 Burt St. Other offices test during their posted hours, and each has a cut-off: the Omaha, Lincoln and Bellevue offices give no drive tests after 3:20 p.m., and several county offices stop over lunch. Drive tests go ahead in bad weather while the office is open.

If you fail

You can retest as soon as the next day, never the same day. For a Class O or Class M license, three failed drive tests in a row mean you can’t retest until you finish a DMV-approved driver training course or hold a learner’s permit (LPD) for 90 days. That rule doesn’t apply to SCP and POP applicants; for them, six failed drive tests mean finishing a course before another try: a driver training course for an SCP, or a driver safety course for a POP.
