PA DMV appointments: permit test and road test

You don't need a PA DMV appointment for the permit test. Walk in to any PennDOT Driver License Center that's open. The road test is different: it always needs a booking, which you make online through PennDOT's Driver's Test Scheduling service or by calling 717-412-5300.

Do you need a PA DMV appointment for the permit test?

PennDOT's scheduling FAQ says no appointment is needed for the knowledge test. Use the Find a Location tool to choose a Driver License Center, and check its hours and PennDOT's holiday closing list before you go. You can take the test at any center, but only once a day.

How to schedule the road test

  1. Check the date printed on your permit. Under 18, you can't test before you've held the permit for six months.
  2. Go to PennDOT's Online Driver's Test Scheduling service, or call 717-412-5300 (TTY 711).
  3. Pick any center that offers the test you need. Under 18, you can book up to six months ahead, so you can book as soon as you get your permit. Same-day tests can’t be booked.

Other places to take the road test

PennDOT-certified third-party testers give the same road test as a Driver License Center, for a fee they set themselves. PennDOT publishes the list as form DL-105NCLF. Some high schools in PennDOT's End-of-Course Skills Program also host road tests for students who finished a certified driver's ed class and their 65 hours.

When online booking won't work

PennDOT's online system can't make a PA DMV appointment for a road test on a permit that isn't valid. If your permit has expired, or you've used your three tries, extend it first with the DL-31, then book.
