Can you take the PA permit test online?

No, you can't take the PA permit test online. PennDOT gives the learner's permit knowledge test only in person, at its Driver License Centers. What you can do online is study the manual, try PennDOT's free practice questions and app, and book your road test once you have your permit.

What can you do online before the PA permit test?

  • Read the Pennsylvania Driver's Manual online, listen to the audio version or download the PDF.
  • Download PennDOT's three question sets, for Chapters 2, 3 and 4 of the manual.
  • Use PennDOT's free PA Driver's Practice Test app on iPhone or Android.
  • Download the DL-180 and DL-180TD forms to fill in before you go.
  • Book your road test through PennDOT's Online Driver's Test Scheduling service.

What has to happen in person

The vision check (if your doctor didn't do it), the knowledge test and the permit itself all happen at a Driver License Center. Extending a learner's permit uses the DL-31, by mail or in person.

Motorcycle and CDL permits too

The motorcycle and commercial (CDL) knowledge tests are also in person at Driver License Centers. PennDOT has a separate free PA Motorcycle Practice Test app for riders.
