How to renew a PA learner's permit

Renewing a permit in PA (PennDOT calls it extending) takes form DL-31 and $6, as of October 2026. Mail it to PennDOT or take it to a Driver License Center. In person you get the permit the same day. By mail it comes 7 to 10 work days after processing.

When can you renew your permit in PA?

You can extend your permit if it has expired or you’ve failed the road test three times, as long as your physical is still valid. An extension lasts one year.

How to do it

  1. Download and fill in the DL-31.
  2. Make a $6 check or money order out to PennDOT.
  3. Mail both to PennDOT, P.O. Box 68272, Harrisburg, PA 17106-8272, or take them to a Driver License Center.

Lost or damaged permit

The same DL-31 gets you a replacement if your permit is lost, stolen, damaged or never arrived. The replacement is good for what's left of the year.

Motorcycle permits are different

A motorcycle learner's permit can't be renewed. You wait until it expires and apply again, no more than three times in five years, passing the knowledge test each time.
