How do you get a Florida insurance adjuster license?
- Check you qualify: at least 18, a Florida resident, a US citizen or legal alien with work authorization, and no resident license in another state.
- Apply online through MyProfile and pay the $50 application fee and $5 license ID fee. Fingerprint fees go to the vendor.
- Send proof of any exam-waiving prerequisite to AgentLicensing@MyFloridaCFO.com.
- Get fingerprinted.
- Take the exam when DFS authorizes it, unless you're exempt or passed it in the year before applying.
- Check MyProfile for any missing items. Once approved, print your license there.
The Florida 6-20 adjuster exam
Pearson VUE runs it. The Florida content outlines, effective January 1, 2026, give it 100 scored questions plus 10 unscored pretest questions, with a 2-hour limit. Casualty and liability and fire, allied lines, marine and dwelling are the two largest sections, at 28% each, and selected Florida statutes and rules make up 11%.
The handbook sets a $44 fee, paid when you book, and a 70% pass mark for every Florida insurance exam. Your score report shows pass or fail when you finish. A pass is valid for one year, and you can take the same exam at most five times in 12 months.
Can you skip the Florida adjuster exam?
Yes, if you hold one of the designations on the DFS list, an insurance degree with 18 semester hours in property, casualty, health and commercial insurance, a Florida General Lines agent license or a public adjuster license. People moving to Florida with at least a year as a licensed all-lines adjuster can transfer if they apply within 90 days of becoming residents.
The 6-20 steps don't include a pre-licensing course. In Florida a course matters when it ends in one of the listed designations.
Florida adjuster license types
| License | Type and class |
|---|---|
| All-Lines Adjuster (company or independent) | 6-20 resident, 7-20 nonresident |
| All-Lines Adjuster, designated home state | 70-20 nonresident |
| Emergency adjuster | 0-70 |
| Public adjuster | 3-20 resident, 73-20 nonresident |
| Public adjuster apprentice appointment | 31-20 |
You can hold only one adjuster license at a time. The 6-20 needs an appointment to be active and expires after 48 months without one. Licensed Florida lawyers don't need an adjuster license to adjust claims.
