New York insurance adjuster license

New York's Department of Financial Services licenses independent adjusters and public adjusters. An independent New York insurance adjuster license needs no pre-licensing course: you pass the state exam with PSI, get fingerprinted and apply within 2 years of passing. The fee is $100 for a full two-year term.

What do you need for a New York insurance adjuster license?

  • A pass on the right New York exam, taken within 2 years before you apply. PSI runs every New York insurance license exam.
  • Fingerprints: electronically through IdentoGO if you have a New York address, or a mailed fingerprint card if you don't.
  • The license fee: $100 for a license that runs more than a year, $50 for one year or less. It isn't refundable.
  • For federal multi-peril crop adjusting, proof of CAPP accreditation.

You can skip the exam if you passed a New York exam and held the same license within the last 2 years. DFS doesn't list the exam's length or fee on its licensing pages; PSI shows them when you register.

Bond: check before you buy one

DFS's independent adjuster page says a bond is no longer required of independent adjuster applicants. Its application instructions page still lists a $1,000 bond for both adjuster types. Ask DFS before paying for a bond as an independent adjuster. Public adjusters do need the $1,000 bond.

License term

New York licenses run for up to two years, from January 1 of an odd year to December 31 of the next even year. Your first license expires on December 31 of an even year, which is why a license issued for a year or less costs half. DFS doesn't mail paper licenses; you print yours online.
