Insurance adjuster salary and pay

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics puts the median at $78,000 a year for claims adjusters, examiners and investigators, from May 2025 data. That's the closest official figure for an insurance adjuster salary, because BLS groups adjusters with examiners and investigators. The lowest-paid 10% earned under $48,850 and the top 10% over $117,040.

What is the average insurance adjuster salary?

BLS reports a median, the middle value, rather than an average. For claims adjusters, examiners and investigators it was $78,000 in May 2025, or $78,020 if you add auto damage appraisers to the group. For comparison, the median for all US occupations was $50,980.

How do independent and public adjusters get paid?

BLS says public adjusters, whom policyholders hire, are paid a percentage of the settled claim. Its wage figures don't include self-employed workers, so there's no official salary for self-employed independent or public adjusters.

Florida's license rules describe the two independent setups: self-appointed, or appointed and employed by a licensed adjusting firm. How a firm pays you is between you and the firm.

Hours that come with the pay

BLS says most adjusters work full time, and they often work evenings and weekends to meet claimants, sometimes on an irregular schedule. Auto damage appraisers usually keep regular hours.
