How to get a Wisconsin driver’s license

You start with an instruction permit, pass a road test for a probationary license, and move to a regular license once you’ve held both long enough and you’re at least 19. Teens can start at 15 with driver education. Adults can take the road test after holding a permit for 7 days. A regular Wisconsin driver’s license costs $42.50 and lasts 8 years.

What are the steps to a Wisconsin driver’s license?

StepFeeLasts
Instruction permit$3518 months
Probationary license$28To 2 years after your next birthday
Regular license$42.508 years

Fees are from DMV’s fee schedule. The knowledge and signs tests are free at a service center, and each road test is $15.

If you’re under 18

  1. Enroll in driver education, including the behind-the-wheel part.
  2. Pass the vision screening, the signs test and the knowledge test, and buy your instruction permit.
  3. Practice for at least 50 hours, 10 of them at night, with a qualified driver beside you.
  4. After 6 months on the permit with no violations, take the road test.
  5. Drive on a probationary license with hour and passenger limits for 9 months, or until you turn 18.

If you’re 18 or older

You don’t need driver education. Pass the vision screening and the two knowledge tests, buy the permit, and hold it for at least 7 days before the road test. DMV’s permit page doesn’t set practice hours for adults. Your first license is still a probationary one, but the hour and passenger limits don’t apply once you’re 18.

Moving to Wisconsin with a license

The handbook says to apply for a Wisconsin license within 60 days of moving, or within 30 days for a CDL. New residents under 21, or with less than three years of U.S., territorial or Canadian driving experience, start with a probationary license.

REAL ID

A REAL ID-compliant license needs an in-person visit with all the required documents. Renewing or replacing a license online never gives you a REAL ID.
