Wisconsin road test checklist: the car, the skills and the results

Before you drive anywhere, the examiner checks that your car is safe: the horn, lights and signals, license plates, doors, mirrors and more. Then you drive on real roads the examiner chooses, with turns, stops, lane changes, a Y-turn, parking and backing. The test lasts 20 to 90 minutes, depending on the license class. Go through this Wisconsin road test checklist with the person who supervises your practice.

What’s on the Wisconsin road test checklist for your car?

Before the test, make sure:

  • The car is the right type for the license you want, and its registration is valid
  • The horn works
  • The lights and turn signals work
  • The license plates are on
  • The doors and mirrors are in working order
  • You know where the controls are, such as the headlights, wipers, defroster and parking brake

If the examiner finds a safety problem with the car, the test may be denied.

The skills you’re tested on

The handbook lists these, so practice each one:

  • Turning
  • Intersections where you have to stop
  • Intersections where you don’t
  • Driving in a business or residential area
  • Changing lanes
  • Maneuvers such as a Y-turn, a roadside stop and start, and parking
  • Backing

The examiner gives instructions like “At the next intersection, turn left” or “Make a Y-turn.” Ask about anything you don’t understand before the test begins.

What to bring

  • The car, registered and safe to drive
  • Your instruction permit. You may take one road test on a permit that expired less than a year ago, but you can’t drive to the test on it
  • Under 18: your MV3001 with the sponsor section filled in. Your driving school sends DMV your driver education proof electronically

Interpreters can’t ride along. DMV says you can’t be refused a test because you don’t hear or understand English, and the examiner will try other ways to communicate, such as picture cards.

After the test

Pass, and you can get your probationary license at the DMV right away if the service center is open. If it’s after hours, come back when it’s open or apply online 24 hours after you pass.

If you don’t pass, you get your results and a skills test guide to practice with. DMV sets a wait of 1 to 14 days, based on how the test went, and the scheduler shows when you can book again. Keep your signed MV3001 and a valid permit for the next try.
