How do you get your Wisconsin driving record?

WayFeeYou get
Online$5An emailed copy, not certified
By mail, plain copy$7A copy, not certified
By mail, certified$12A certified copy

Online, you need your license or ID number, the last four digits of your Social Security number, your date of birth and gender, or your full name and full Social Security number instead of the license number. You also need a camera on your computer or phone.

By mail, send the form and a check or money order payable to Registration Fee Trust to Driver Records, WisDOT, P.O. Box 7995, Madison, WI 53707‑7995.

What the record shows

Your current license details, such as name, address, height and weight, and the past five years of driving. Most entries stay five years, but serious or alcohol-related convictions may stay for good. It leaves out your full license history, your ID card details and some juvenile records.

For someone else’s record, you use form MV2896 and say what entitles you to it. Employers, insurers and other frequent requesters use DMV’s Public Abstract Request System.

Checking your license status

DMV’s status check shows your license’s issue and expiration dates, whether it’s REAL ID compliant, your classes, endorsements and restrictions, and whether each is valid. “EXP” means expired, and “OTH” means the license type was replaced by another. A separate tool tracks a new card in the mail.

The Wisconsin point system

Everyone starts at zero. Reaching 12 points in any 12 months suspends your license for:

PointsRegularPermit or new
12‑162 months6 months
17‑224 months6 months
23‑306 months6 months
Over 301 year1 year

“Permit or new” covers instruction permits, probationary licenses and people with no license. A traffic safety course at a technical college takes off 3 points, once in three years. Most convictions can come off five years after the conviction date, and alcohol-related ones stay. Out-of-state tickets carry no points but still appear on your record. DMV lists the points for each ticket in its charge code tables, BDS108 and BDS109.

Reinstating a suspended license

DMV’s online reinstatement service tells you what you still have to do and lets you pay. The fee is $60, or $200 after an OWI-related suspension or revocation. You may also need to file SR-22 proof of insurance or have an ignition interlock device fitted.

By mail, send your name, date of birth, license number, address and payment to the DMV Communication Center, P.O. Box 7983, Madison, WI 53707‑7983. It takes two business days once received. In person, get to a service center at least 90 minutes before it closes.

Occupational license

While you’re suspended, you may be able to get an occupational license. It lets you drive up to 12 hours a day and 60 a week to work, school and places like the grocery store, and you’ll need to show proof of financial responsibility.
