11 plus registration and how to apply

There are two steps, and both matter. First you register your child for your area's test, in Year 5: in the seven English areas covered here, 11 plus registration for the 2026 tests closed in June, and opened in May wherever a start date is given. Then, in Year 6, you apply for school places through your council by 31 October.

Who handles 11 plus registration in your area?

Each area's page has its exact 2026 dates.

Registering isn't applying

The CSSE says its registration form "is not an application to the schools", Medway says the same of its test, and Warwickshire says taking the test doesn't guarantee an offer. A test result on its own gets your child nothing until you name the schools on your application.

How to apply for an 11 plus school place

  1. Get the results. In these areas, where a date is given, they arrive in October, before the deadline.
  2. Apply through your own council, even for grammar schools in another area. GOV.UK says applications usually open on 1 September.
  3. List the schools in your real order of preference. GOV.UK says listing only one school won't raise your chances of getting it.
  4. Send it by 31 October. Missing the deadline makes a place at your chosen schools less likely.
  5. Councils send offers on 1 March.

If you miss registration

Late registration is rare. Medway accepts none, with no exceptions. Buckinghamshire only accepts late registration if you've very recently moved to the area, and Wirral only if you moved to Wirral after the closing date.
