11 plus verbal reasoning, non-verbal reasoning and vocabulary

Buckinghamshire Council puts it simply: the test lets children show their skills with words, numbers, and pictures or diagrams. Verbal reasoning is the words part, and non-verbal reasoning the pictures and diagrams. In Buckinghamshire, 11 plus verbal reasoning sits in the verbal skills paper, which makes up half the score, but Essex and Northern Ireland don't test either kind of reasoning. Vocabulary is tested through both reasoning and English questions.

How is 11 plus vocabulary tested?

None of the test bodies in these areas publishes an 11 plus vocabulary list. SEAG names vocabulary as one part of its English test, and Buckinghamshire's verbal skills paper puts verbal reasoning, comprehension and technical English together. GL Assessment's free verbal reasoning and verbal skills PDFs show its word questions.

Our practice test has synonym and antonym questions, with an explanation for each answer.

Practising non-verbal reasoning

These questions use pictures and diagrams, so practise them on paper. GL Assessment's free materials include a non-verbal reasoning PDF and a combined non-verbal reasoning and maths PDF, and Buckinghamshire's familiarisation booklet has sample questions. In Medway, each non-verbal section starts with 30 seconds of practice questions, so your child will see how it works on the day.
