Do you need the 18th Edition qualification by law?

No law names it. The IET says BS7671 doesn't set qualifications for electricians and doesn't require anyone to take the course. What the law does require, through the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 and the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989, is that everyone doing electrical work is competent.

Trade associations and employers can ask for more. The IET notes that some expect members to get the qualification within 12 months.

Who it's for and what comes next

City & Guilds describes it as a qualification for practising electricians updating to the latest edition and for newly qualified electricians who need the certificate. It's a VRQ, available in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, and it can be taken as a one-day refresher or a full course.

City & Guilds points to inspection and testing as the next step, with qualifications such as 2392 and the 2391 awards, and says the award could lead towards work as an inspector or surveyor.
