United Kingdom · Wiring Regulations exam

Booking the 18th Edition exam only

Yes, you can sit it without a course. City & Guilds sets no formal entry requirements for 2382, and colleges can sell the test on its own: Aylesbury College's shop lists the 2382‑26 exam as a separate item. To book the 18th Edition exam only, contact an approved centre that runs the e-volve test. It has to be sure you have a realistic chance of passing before it enters you.

Who is the 18th Edition exam only route for?

City & Guilds aims the qualification at practising electricians with relevant experience, and at allied professionals such as surveyors, consultants and other trades who need to update their knowledge of the Wiring Regulations. Its handbook expects a basic knowledge of electrical science, and the award is approved for people aged 16 and over.

If you already know BS7671 well and only need the new certificate, the exam on its own may be enough. If the book is new to you, a three-day course is built for that.

How to book

  1. Find an approved centre with the Find a centre search on City & Guilds' 2382 page.
  2. Ask whether it offers the 2382‑26 exam without a course, and what it charges.
  3. Give the centre your email address when it registers you. City & Guilds issues the certificate as a digital credential.
  4. Get a paper copy of BS 7671:2018+A4:2026 ready, with only the marks City & Guilds allows.
  5. Sit the 60-question test on e-volve on the day the centre gives you.

Getting ready without a course

Work through the eight learning outcomes with your book open, then take City & Guilds' free sample test under time. The sample paper has a mark scheme, so you can check yourself.

The 2382‑22 version closed to new entries on 31 July 2026, so any booking now is for 2382‑26 and Amendment 4.
