How Part 7 works
Section 700 explains why Part 7 exists and how its numbering works. Each section's regulations modify or add to the general ones: Section 722, for example, changes the general requirements for protection against electric shock and adds rules on PME supplies, socket-outlets, external influences, isolation and RCD protection for EV chargers.
So for a job in a special location, read the general rules and the Part 7 section together. City & Guilds' learning outcome asks you to interpret how these sections affect the general requirements.
Recent changes to special locations
Amendment 1:2020 rewrote Section 722 on EV charging. Amendment 4:2026 added Section 716 on Power over Ethernet, made a major revision of Section 710, Medical locations, and added a schedule for recording supplementary bonding test results.
Bathrooms: Section 701
Section 701 has its own zones, IP ratings and RCD rules, and the IET's technical helpline says it often gets questions about it.
