Taking an 18th Edition course online

You can, in two ways: self-paced e-learning or a live virtual classroom. NICEIC, for example, lists a 2382‑26 e-learning course of 14‑21 hours and a three-day virtual course. Taking an 18th Edition course online doesn't change the exam, though. It's City & Guilds' 60-question e-volve test, taken through an approved centre with a paper copy of BS7671.

Is the 18th Edition exam online?

Yes, in the sense that you answer on screen: the test runs on City & Guilds' e-volve system. You still take it through an approved centre, and City & Guilds' 2382 page says nothing about sitting it at home. Ask the provider where and when its exam happens. Able Skills, for instance, runs its weekend course over two weekends with the online exam on the second Sunday.

One rule matters if you study online: electronic copies of BS7671 can't be used in e-volve tests. Bring the printed book.

Is there a free 18th Edition course online?

The courses in the table all charge. The free official material is City & Guilds' 2382‑26 sample test, and the IET's FAQs, Wiring Matters articles and model forms. None of them leads to the qualification.

E-learning or a virtual classroom?

E-learning lets you work through the material when it suits you. A virtual classroom runs live on set days, like a classroom course on a screen, so you can ask the tutor questions as you go. Both NICEIC and the IET run live virtual sessions.
