The three written exams
CISI says around 40% of the study time goes on client case scenarios. CISI’s factsheet, marked February 2020 and still linked from the qualification page, describes each three-hour paper as:
- one 40-mark case study, with no choice
- two 20-mark case studies, with no choice
- four questions from a choice of six, worth 5 marks each
They’re narrative exams with set sessions, and CISI suggests one unit every six months. The workbooks page gives the last exam date on each unit’s Version 13.
Who can enrol on the CISI Chartered Wealth Manager Qualification?
You need an appropriate benchmark qualification, gained after 1 December 2001. CISI’s list includes:
- the IAD or any other qualification that meets the Financial Conduct Authority’s (FCA’s) retail advice standard, including one that needs gap-fill
- a relevant Level 3 benchmark qualification with a regulatory paper and a technical unit, such as CISI’s Capital Markets Programme
- CISI’s International Certificate in Wealth & Investment Management or Certificate in International Advanced Wealth Management
- the Investment Management Certificate (IMC) Level 4, the CFA qualification, full UK accountancy or actuarial qualifications (not the Association of Accounting Technicians, AAT), or a financial master’s degree with a strong investment element
The Certificate in Corporate Finance doesn’t qualify, and CISI doesn’t accept experience instead. Exemption is only possible from the Financial Markets unit. Questions go to exam.eligibility@cisi.org.
The same CISI page also says it sets no entry or eligibility requirements, so if you’re unsure, ask exam.eligibility@cisi.org before you book.
FCA status and the Chartered Wealth Manager title
The FCA’s appropriate qualification table lists it by its Level 7 name for advising on and dealing in securities and derivatives, advising on retail investment products (activities 2, 3, 4 and 6, 12 and 13), and managing investments (14 and 10). Its entry names it as formerly the Masters in Wealth Management. For the advice activities the FCA lists the Masters only to its post-2010 exam standards, and for managing investments it lists the Masters without that limit.
It makes you eligible to join CISI as a Member, with the letters MCSI, and it’s a route to CISI’s Chartered Wealth Manager title.
