CISI CPD requirements

Members on the Self-Declare scheme need 10 hours of continuing professional development (CPD) a year, and Chartered members, CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER (CFP) professionals and Statement of Professional Standing (SPS) holders need 35. The Chartered Institute for Securities & Investment (CISI) requires CISI CPD from every member except students, and its own activities go into your CPD log in MyCISI automatically.

  • 10 hoursYearly CPD on the Self-Declare scheme
  • 35 hoursYearly CPD for Chartered, CFP or SPS
  • Up to 5 hoursStructured reading CISI accepts in a CPD log

Structured and unstructured CPD

CISI splits activities into two kinds:

  • Structured CPD, done for the purpose of learning: a training course, a conference, a verifiable webcast, elearning, an exam, or writing or presenting on a professional topic
  • Unstructured CPD, with no set learning aim: an informal meeting, coaching a colleague, an unverifiable podcast or your own research

CISI accepts no more than 5 hours of structured reading in a CPD log, and the study for a benchmark qualification can’t be logged as CPD.

CISI CPD by membership grade

WhoYearly CPDMinimums within it
Members on the Self-Declare scheme (not students)10 hours6 hours structured, 1 hour in integrity and ethics
Chartered members and those working towards it35 hours21 hours structured, 3.5 hours in integrity and ethics
CFP professionals and SPS holders35 hoursAt least 10%, or 3.5 hours, in ethics

CISI recommends 35 hours a year for everyone, at least 21 structured. If you’re on the Self-Declare scheme and don’t declare, your membership is at risk of lapsing at the end of your membership year.

How do you log CISI CPD?

  1. Sign in to MyCISI and open your CPD log.
  2. Check that your CISI activities are there: they’re added for you.
  3. Add outside activities yourself; each must be relevant to your work, and CISI may ask you to show that.
  4. On the Self-Declare scheme, tick the CPD year declaration and submit it.

Members who log CPD with the Chartered Insurance Institute (CII) or Competent Adviser can upload those logs to the CISI log. CISI gives a certificate for each completed CPD year, and questions go to cpdscheme@cisi.org.
