LNAT questions to practise, with answers explained

Here are 20 free LNAT questions we wrote in the style of Section A of the National Admissions Test for Law: five short argumentative passages of our own, with four questions on each. Every question has one correct answer and a short explanation. Real Section A has 42 questions on 12 passages in 95 minutes, and the essay isn’t here, so treat this as a skills check, not a mock test.

Question 1 of 20

Read the passage, then answer the question. “Every city that has closed its centre to cars has heard the same prediction: the shops will empty and the streets will die. The prediction is rarely borne out. Pedestrians linger in a way that drivers cannot, and a shopper on foot passes far more doorways than one who parks outside a single store. Closing streets suits some places better than others, of course. A compact old town with good buses is not a sprawling suburb where the nearest shop is a twenty-minute drive away. The lesson is not that every high street should ban cars, but that the fear of empty shops is no good reason for refusing to try.” Which of the following best expresses the main conclusion of the passage?

How to use these 20 questions

Each passage has four questions, as Section A puts 3 or 4 on each of its passages. The questions are about the passage itself, so take what it says as true, even where you’d disagree. They test the skills LNAT’s guide lists, such as finding the main conclusion, spotting what a writer assumes, seeing what would strengthen or weaken a claim, and reading a phrase in context. Ours have five options, as LNAT’s 2010 practice papers do.

Give yourself about 45 minutes, close to the Section A pace of 95 minutes for 42 questions. Aim for 15 right, which is 75%. That’s our own target: the LNAT has no pass mark, and each university uses your mark out of 42 in its own way.

Where can you find more LNAT questions?

The LNAT Consortium’s free online sample test works like the real one, and its two practice papers come with a mark scheme and a commentary. Its preparation guide has more sample questions, with the examiners’ reasons. Those come from the people who set the test. Our 20 don’t.
