The A2 motorbike test

The A2 motorbike test gets you a licence for motorbikes up to 35kW, from age 19. By direct access you complete compulsory basic training (CBT), pass the motorcycle theory test and ride both modules on an A2 bike. If you’ve held a full A1 licence for at least 2 years, progressive access means taking just module 1 and module 2 again, with no new theory test.

  • 70kWMost original power for a restricted bike
  • 20 to 35kWPower of an A2 test bike
  • At least 245ccEngine size of an A2 test bike

What can you ride with an A2 licence?

  • Motorbikes with a power-to-weight ratio of no more than 0.2 kW per kg
  • Only bikes not derived from a vehicle with more than double their power
  • Everything in category A1

How can you take the A2 motorbike test?

RouteWho it’s forWhat you take
Direct accessAnyone 19 or overCBT, the theory test, module 1 and module 2
Progressive accessFull A1 licence held for at least 2 yearsModule 1 and module 2

On the progressive access route there’s a time limit between passing module 1 and taking module 2, set out on the module 1 page.

Using a restricted bike for the test

  • You can restrict a bigger bike so it fits the A2 power band
  • You can’t restrict it below half its original power, so a 60kW bike can go no lower than 30kW
  • Bring proof of the restriction on headed paper from a main dealer, official importer or recognised specialist, showing the number plate. A dyno test certificate doesn’t count
  • A bike with a switchable power mode can’t have interchangeable carburettor heads, an exhaust manifold restrictor or a hidden engine control unit

Without the proof the test is cancelled. The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) keeps a list of A2 and A bikes that can be used for the riding tests, last updated on 4 December 2025.
