Motorbike test cost: theory, module 1 and module 2

A full motorcycle licence through GOV.UK means three fees from the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA): £23 for the theory test, £15.50 for module 1 and £75 for module 2 on a weekday, as of October 2026. Compulsory basic training (CBT) comes on top, and the training school sets that price, so your total motorbike test cost depends on the school as well as on DVSA.

Module 1 (off-road)£15.50£15.50
Module 2 (on-road)£75£88.50

Bank holidays are charged at the evening and weekend price. These are the prices for booking through GOV.UK, and GOV.UK warns that unofficial websites usually charge more.

Costs that aren’t DVSA test fees

  • A provisional licence from the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA): £34 online, or £43 by post with form D1
  • A CBT course: the school’s price depends on where you train and whether you bring your own moped or motorcycle
  • Lessons for module 1 and module 2: GOV.UK doesn’t publish prices, so ask schools
  • Study material, if you want more than DVSA’s free mock tests

When you lose the fee or pay again

  • You change or cancel with less than 3 full working days’ notice
  • You’re late, or you turn up without the right documents or, for a riding test, without a bike
  • Your bike breaks down during the test or doesn’t meet DVSA’s rules
  • You feel unwell and the test can’t be finished
  • You fail module 1 and don’t move your module 2 test with 3 full days’ notice

Price differences and cancellations by DVSA

  • Move a riding test to an evening or weekend slot and you pay the difference; move it to a weekday and you get the difference back
  • If DVSA cancels for bad weather, it rebooks you for free, but you can’t claim expenses
  • If DVSA cancels at short notice for another reason, such as an ill examiner, you can apply for out-of-pocket expenses

What does a motorbike test cost in Northern Ireland?

The theory test is also £23, but the Driver and Vehicle Agency (DVA) charges its own prices for the riding tests, which are split differently from module 1 and module 2 in Great Britain.
