How to book your motorcycle theory test

Book on GOV.UK with your provisional licence number, an email address and a debit or credit card, then pick a centre, date and time. You can book a motorcycle theory test once your provisional licence covers mopeds or motorcycles, and you must have lived in England, Scotland or Wales for at least 185 days in the 12 months before the test. Northern Ireland has its own booking service.

What do you need to book a motorcycle theory test?

  • A provisional driving licence that covers mopeds or motorcycles, and its licence number
  • An email address for the confirmation
  • A debit or credit card
  • Any support you need on the day, such as a voiceover, extra time or British Sign Language (BSL), which you tell the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) about while booking

No provisional licence yet? Apply to the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) first. The steps and the cost are on the licence page.

Changing, checking or cancelling your theory test

Use the same GOV.UK service with your licence number. Monday to Saturday count as working days; Sundays and public holidays don’t. Change or cancel with less notice and you pay again or lose the fee, unless you can claim a short-notice refund. You can get one for:

  • An illness or injury that stops you taking the test
  • A bereavement
  • A school or college exam at the same time
  • Your driving licence being stolen

Email DVSA with the subject ‘Unavoidable short notice cancellation’ and attach proof, such as a fit note, a letter from your school or a crime number. If you’ve lost your booking email, GOV.UK’s check service shows the date, time and centre. You don’t need to take the confirmation to the test.

Booking module 1 and module 2

The riding tests go through GOV.UK’s driving test booking service, which runs from 6am to 11:40pm. You can book the two modules separately or together, but you must pass module 1 before you take module 2. You usually need your theory pass first.

  • New dates are added every Monday at 6am
  • Earlier slots appear whenever another learner changes or cancels. There’s no waiting list
  • Upgrade tests, which GOV.UK says include moving from A1 to A2, are booked by calling DVSA
  • A motorcycle approved training body can apply to DVSA to book and manage riding tests for its pupils

The 2026 booking rules that allow only 2 changes, let only the learner book and limit moves to nearby centres apply to car driving tests only. GOV.UK says they don’t apply to other types of test.
