Motorbike theory test in Northern Ireland (NI)

In Northern Ireland (NI), the motorbike theory test and the riding tests are run by the Driver and Vehicle Agency (DVA), and you book them on nidirect, not GOV.UK. The theory test has the same two parts and pass marks as in Great Britain (GB). The riding tests, fees and compulsory basic training (CBT) rules are different, and since 1 October 2026 a GB provisional licence can’t be used to book or take a category A, A1 or A2 motorcycle test in NI.

  • 6DVA centres that run the manoeuvres test
  • 4 hoursLeast on-road riding in an NI CBT course
  • 1 October 2026When NI stopped accepting GB provisionals

How does the NI motorbike theory test compare with GB?

  • The same two parts, multiple choice then hazard perception, and you must pass both
  • 50 questions in just under an hour, with 43 to pass, and some questions specific to motorcycles
  • Hazard perception pass mark of 44 out of 75
  • In October 2026 nidirect said the switch from case studies to video clips didn’t yet apply to motorcycle tests in Northern Ireland
  • Your result and feedback within 10 minutes of finishing
  • If you fail, you can book again the next day but can’t sit the test for 3 clear working days
  • The certificate lasts 2 years from the day you pass, with no exceptions

With reading problems you can apply for more time, just under two hours for the questions.

What to bring to an NI theory test

  • Both parts of your signed Northern Ireland licence, the photocard and the paper counterpart
  • Originals only
  • Proof of any change to your details since you booked
  • Arrive 15 minutes early. If you’re late or missing these, you can’t sit the test and you lose the fee
  • Your phone, watch, pens and other belongings go in a locker
  • Having someone sit the test for you is an offence with a fine of up to £2,500

Riding tests in Northern Ireland

After the theory test there are two practical tests: a manoeuvres test, then an on-road test. The manoeuvres test includes:

  • A slow ride at walking pace alongside the examiner
  • A slalom and figure of eight around cones
  • Walking and riding U-turns, and using the stands
  • A curve in second or third gear at 30 km/h (18.75 mph) or more
  • An avoidance and braking exercise, and an emergency stop, each from at least 50 km/h (31.25 mph)

The manoeuvres test runs only at Ballymena, Craigavon, Downpatrick, Londonderry (Newbuildings), Mallusk and Omagh.

The on-road test takes about 40 minutes and includes an eyesight check, two safety check questions, angle and normal starts, maybe a hill start, a section of independent riding, and a final question on balance when carrying a passenger.

CBT and learner rules in NI

  • Only registered Approved Motorcycle Instructors (AMIs) and CBT trainers can run the course
  • A CBT done on a moped or A1 bike doesn’t cover an A2 or A bike, so you take another CBT on the bigger bike
  • Learners on A2 or A bikes must be with an AMI at all times on public roads
  • After passing an A2 or A test you display R plates for one year
  • If you’ve passed a moped (AM) test, you don’t need CBT for A1
