The motorcycle hazard perception test

It’s the second part of the theory test, taken straight after the multiple-choice questions: 14 video clips of everyday road scenes, where you click as soon as you see a hazard starting to develop. You need 44 out of 75. The motorcycle hazard perception test isn’t special to bikes. nidirect, the Northern Ireland government site, says the same version is used for every category of test, and GOV.UK describes it in the same words as the car test.

  • 5Most points for one developing hazard
  • ZeroClip score for clicking in a pattern
  • 3 minutesLongest break before the clips start

How does the motorcycle hazard perception test work?

  • A short video explains how this part works before the first clip
  • Every clip has at least one developing hazard, and one clip has two
  • A developing hazard is something that would make you act, such as changing speed or direction
  • You get one go at each clip, and you can’t review or change your clicks
  • Clicking at the wrong moment doesn’t cost points

GOV.UK’s example: a parked car isn’t a developing hazard. It becomes one when its right indicator starts flashing and it begins to pull out, because you’d need to slow down.

Is hazard perception different for motorcyclists?

No. The clips and the 44 out of 75 pass mark are the same for car drivers and motorcyclists. Safe Driving for Life, run by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) with its publisher, says the clips are shown from a driver’s point of view, and DVSA sells the same practice clips to app makers for every type of test.

nidirect says some clips show fog, rain, snow, ice and wind, night-time and the low light of dawn and dusk.

Where to practise motorcycle hazard clips

GOV.UK links 3 free practice clips, which aren’t used in the real test but show how it works. For more, DVSA sells an online hazard perception guide and includes clips in its motorcycle kit, and theory apps from other companies can include DVSA’s licensed practice clips.

If you fail hazard perception

You fail the whole theory test, even with 43 or more in the questions, and you retake both parts. The letter you get at the centre tells you which part let you down.
