United Kingdom · Theory test

Is a bike theory test the same as a car theory test?

Partly. A bike theory test is the same as a car one in its format: two parts, the same pass marks, time limit and £23 fee, and the same centres. The questions are different, though, and a pass in one doesn’t count for the other: with a car licence you still need a motorcycle theory test, and the reverse is true too.

  • £23Fee for either theory test
  • 2 of 3Source books the two tests share
  • SeparateTheory passes for bike and car licences

How is a bike theory test the same as a car test?

  • Two parts, booked and taken together, and you must pass both
  • 50 multiple-choice questions in 57 minutes, with 43 to pass
  • Three of the 50 questions are about a short video clip: car tests already use them, and bike tests use them from 5 November 2026
  • 14 hazard perception clips, with 44 out of 75 to pass
  • The same GOV.UK booking service, theory test centres, ID checks and support such as a voiceover or British Sign Language (BSL)

What’s different

  • The source books: the bike test uses Riding: the essential skills where the car test uses Driving: the essential skills, alongside the Highway Code and Know Your Traffic Signs
  • The law: the driving licence regulations list separate theory test matters for mopeds and motorcycles, including how visible riders are to others, protective gloves, boots and helmets, and slippery drain covers, road markings and tram rails
  • The minimum age: 16 for a moped and 17 for a motorcycle. The car test’s ages, including the exception at 16, are on the car course’s age page
  • What the pass is for: car learners have 2 years to pass the driving test, riders 2 years to pass module 1 and module 2

Does a car theory test count for a motorbike?

No. GOV.UK says that if you have a car licence, you have to pass a motorcycle theory test before the motorcycle test. nidirect says the same for Northern Ireland: a car licence holder who wants a motorcycle licence takes a theory test for that category. A car licence can, though, let you ride a moped without any test, depending on when you passed.

Does a bike theory test count for a car?

No. GOV.UK’s car guide says that with a moped or motorcycle licence you must still pass a car theory test before the car driving test.
