Motorcycle theory test books

The motorcycle theory test books that the multiple-choice questions are based on are the Highway Code, Know Your Traffic Signs and Riding: the essential skills from the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA). GOV.UK publishes the first two online, and the third is a printed book from DVSA’s publisher. DVSA also sells The Official DVSA Theory Test for Motorcyclists, a revision book of its practice questions.

Reading them online

GOV.UK has the Highway Code section by section and Know Your Traffic Signs as a PDF and web pages. For the motorcycle test, start with these parts of the Highway Code:

  • The rules for motorcyclists: helmets, eye protection, passengers and being seen
  • Annex 2, motorcycle licence requirements: compulsory basic training (CBT), the licence categories and what learners can’t do
  • Rule 253, which bars provisional motorcycle licence holders from motorways
  • Annex 6, which sets the tyre tread rule for motorcycles

The Official DVSA Theory Test for Motorcyclists

This £19.99 book is the revision guide, not a source book. Its publisher says it has all the official DVSA motorcycle revision questions, and that new first aid questions start in 2026. Like every practice question, they aren’t the ones in the real test, but DVSA says they’re very similar.

The same questions are in DVSA’s online kit and its Theory Test Kit app, so you don’t need the book as well as one of those.

Welsh and Northern Ireland editions

The Highway Code is sold in Welsh as Rheolau’r Ffordd Fawr, and there’s a separate Highway Code for Northern Ireland. Both are £4.99 in DVSA’s shop.

Motorcycle theory test CDs, DVDs and downloads

GOV.UK now lists DVSA’s theory kit as an online course for PC or Mac and as phone apps, not as a disc. nidirect still mentions a hazard perception DVD, but DVSA’s shop sells that guide as an online course from £10.
