Which exam Colorado gives, and when it changes
Colorado gives the legacy UBE: the MBE, the MEE essays and the MPT tasks. The Colorado Supreme Court adopted the NextGen UBE on March 14, 2024. Law school graduates take NextGen starting with the July 2028 exam, and February 2028 is the last legacy exam.
On October 15, 2026, the court set 620 as the NextGen passing score. Colorado also accepts transferred NextGen scores from other states, starting with scores from the July 2026 exam. The legacy passing score is 270 out of 400.

How to apply for the Colorado bar exam
- Pass the MPRE and send your score to the Office of Attorney Admissions.
- Apply in the new ILG Admissions platform, which the office uses from the February 2027 exam on.
- If you failed in July 2026, reapply through ILG too. Your old application doesn't carry over, so keep a copy of it.

When do Colorado bar exam results come out?
The July 2026 results came out on September 17, 2026. The office posts an alphabetical pass list and exam statistics on its results page, and you get your own results notice with the steps for taking the oath.
In July 2026, 70% of 700 takers passed in Colorado, and 79% of first-time takers, according to NCBE. See how that compares on our pass rates page.
Colorado reciprocity: transferring a score or moving as a lawyer
There are two ways in without sitting the Colorado exam:
- UBE score transfer: your score must meet Colorado's passing standard and be from the last three years. A score three to five years old counts only if you have two years of law practice right before you apply. The fee is $810.
- Admission on motion: NCBE's guide lists 3 years of practice in the last 5, with no reciprocity needed. The application fee is $1,800.
- Retakes: Colorado sets no limit on attempts, according to NCBE's guide.
